Internship with the ICTR/ACSU in The Hague (The Netherlands)

In addition to Arusha and Kigali, applicants also have the possibility to apply for an internship with the Appeals Chamber Support Unit (ACSU) in The Hague. The ICTR/ACSU is composed of three functional Sub-Units which are the “Chamber Support Sub-Unit”, the “Other Registry Services Sub-Unit” and the “Language Services Sub-Unit”. Each of them accepts interns.

Candidates should duly complete the application form found on the website of the ICTR and submit it accompanied by relevant material as specified below for each of the Sub-Units. Only applicants who have submitted all necessary material will be considered.

I. Internship with the “Chamber Support Sub-Unit” (CSS-U)

Responsibilities of the Chamber Support Sub-Unit

The principal task of the Chamber Support Sub-unit is to assist the Judges of the Appeals Chamber in their judicial duties. The Appeals Chamber of the ICTR is extremely busy, and interns in the Chamber Support sub-unit are required to undertake a great deal of substantive legal work such as:

• research in public international law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, comparative criminal law, international human rights law;
• drafting of memos to the Judges and/or legal officers;
• participating in the drafting of orders, decisions, andjudgments of the Appeals Chamber.

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria are the same as for other internships at the ICTR. However, the Chamber Support sub-unit favours candidates who:

• have strong academic credentials;
• have completed a law degree (or are very near completion);
• are fluent in either English or French and have a working knowledge of the other language;
• have good research, analytical and drafting skills;
• have shown a special interest in (international) criminal law, international human rights law or international humanitarian law.

How to apply

The application form found on the website of the ICTR shall be duly completed and accompanied by:

• a covering letter stating the reasons for applying;
• at least two written references addressing the issues detailed in Annex B;
• copy of most recent university transcript;
• a sample of research/course work relevant to the preferred assignment area prepared in English or French.

Candidates should make sure to tick the box "Appeals Chamber, Legal Section" at question 19 of the application form. The deadline for receipt of applications is three months before the intended period of internship.

II. Internship with the “Other Registry Services Sub-Unit” (ORSS-U)

Responsibilities of the Other Registry Services Sub-Unit

The Other Registry Services Sub-Unit is tasked to providing all administrative and judicial support responsive to the needs of the Appeals Chamber in The Hague (The Netherlands) and by extension of the Trial Chambers in Arusha ( Tanzania). Its responsibilities are multiple such as:

• maintaining the physical and electronic judicial archives;
• organizing and covering Court proceedings;
• organizing testimonies of witnesses by video-link;
• disseminating judicial documents and information relating to judicial proceedings/documents;
• conducting research on legal issues relating to Court Management Activities

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria are the same as for other internships at the ICTR. However, the Other Registry Services Sub-Unit gives priority to candidates who:

• have completed a law degree or paralegal diploma (or are very near completion);
• possess a strong experience in records keeping and maintenance of archives;
• have substantive experience in court proceedings;
• are fluent in either English or French and have a working knowledge of the other language;
• possess good drafting and analytical skills,
